"WiM 40+ focuses on issues and challenges specifically relating to women over 40 who are involved, or who want to become involved, in new media/internet professions."
With Kitty and Frances as Co-Chairs, the ongoing support of the WIM board, especially Sue Levin, Susan Kim, and Priscilla Hazlewood, and volunteers such as Mora Chartrand, Ellen Lichtig, Gail Persily, and Pamela Clayton, WIM 40+ has continued to grow and to create community for women over 40 in high tech and interactive media.
A book list, a job-search resource sheet, bios of WIM 40+ presenters and summaries of presentations can be seen in the 'For The Record' section of this site.
The Beginning:
At a seminar on the Futures of Women organized in April 1998 by Constance Beutel, Kitty Reeve met Sue Levin, President of WIM. Because of Kitty's online work, Sue subsequently asked her to speak to WiM and to show how she segued her career from print journalism to the Internet.
The event, held in September 1998, was promoted to attract women over 40 who work or want to work in multimedia. The high energy generated by Kitty's talk made it clear that this group of 40+ women and their friends wanted to continue to meet and to network and that a space for sharing our concerns and interests was needed on an on-going basis. Sue Levin asked Kitty if she would be interested instarting SIG for older members of WIM, which eventually became WiM 40+.
Kitty was joined in founding WIM 40+ by Frances Doughty, who had experience in interactive technology and in organization-building, and became Co-Founder and Co-Chair of WIM 40+ with Kitty. The first WIM 40+ meeting took place on January 27,1999,when Nina Mullen of the Center for Digital Storytelling presented empowering and inspiring life-stories by womenover 40 who had found support at the Center for using new media to record their lives and their voices.
