history

The Beginning: The Panel Discussion
Women in Multimedia was created in January 1994 specifically to produce a forum for women working within, and interested in, the new media industry. Our objective was to establish a network of high-tech professional women who are interested in meeting other high-tech professional women with whom they may share industry insights, information, job opportunities and advice.

The goals of this discussion were to explore the effects of new media production and consumption on women, and to create a dialogue insisting that women and women's experiences be taken into consideration in the design and development of new technologies. We received a grant from the Esprit Foundation, for this panel discussion, as well as assistance from Media Alliance, Film Arts Foundation and Life on the Water Theater. The overwhelming success of the panel discussion prompted further exploration of women's voices as producers and consumers of new media.
